1. If you are interested in becoming and actor or actress, in making a break into the movies — if you are interested in becoming a good actor or actress — you need to keep in mind that some people do have an innate ability for acting. On some level it may be something of an oversimplification to way that some people have an innate ability to act, making them more likely to be able to find success in the movies. But, in reality, some people do seem more inclined to excel in the various arts — including acting and the movies. Therefore, you may have some recognition as to whether you do have some innate tendencies that make you more inclined to excel in acting and in the movies.2. Most teenagers who aspire to become and actor or actress will enroll in theater classes and generally major in this area. Theater teaches basic skills of acting, stage presence, voice projection, character development and many others. Schools such as Harvard, Yale and in fact every university’s have wonderful programs that can offer great insight into this career field. A majority of those who enter this field do not make it to Broadway, but this is not the main goal of most students. In examining the behavior of most students in this major, I have found that most are happy just staring in a local role in a city theater. Those who choose this route can make a decent living if they are talented enough to be in wide spread performances.

3. As with many things in life, when it comes to bettering your skills as an actor or actress - whether it be for the stage, for television or for movies — practice is important. Indeed, a person can never hone his or her skills as an actor or actress without … acting. Therefore, if you truly are interested in acting, and even if your goal is the movies, you should take advantage of other acting opportunities that come to down the pike. For example, many an actor or actress has been able to cut his or her acting teeth in the world of the theater, including more local theater companies. In addition, you can get your foot in the door to the world of acting, and even onward into the world of movies, by doing things such as commercials (even commercials for a localized market). Whatever the legitimate opportunity may be, you can garner tremendous skills and experience in acting through practice, by taking on different roles — no matter how seemingly small.

4. Submitted your Performances to well know theaters. For example, in Montgomery Alabama there is an exact replica of the Shakespeare Festival down to each brick. Performing in such theaters can provide a wonderful portfolio for you to move up in the acting world. It is ok to try Broadway initially, but if you are turned down, then it is NOT the time to give up but press through and start beefing up your portfolio for submission to theater such as Broadway. Agencies and theaters like to see consistency, determination and a great work ethic and having a list of performances is one of the only things that can do this.

5. Don’t act for the money. Although you can become very wealthy acting, a very small percentage make it, but don’t let it get you down. If money is your forte then a career that has proven to be more lucrative would be a better choice. Acting requires passion and diligence, and if you lack this, it will shine through your personality on stage and thus prevent you from achieving your monetary goals.

6. Finally, a person who is able to refine his or her skills as an actor or actress — on the stage, on television or in the movies — has to be willing to take risks, to stretch, to experiment. In other words, if you would to grow and succeed as an actor — in the movies or otherwise — you will want to try new things along the way. You will want to challenge yourself and develop your ability to take on different roles and tasks.

These are just basic tips on acting, remember, do what you love and the money will follow. Take these to heart and you will discover your niche in acting along the way. Remember, diligence and hard work when the race.
