The Genie Awards annually recognize and celebrate our country's cinematic achievements. In 1979, the Academy of Canadian Cinema was created to implement the Genie Awards in the stead of the Canadian Film Awards, which had an often-turbulent evolution from 1949-1978. Since the first Genie Awards in 1980 the event has grown in prominence and stature to become one of the most prestigious cultural events in Canada. Each year the Genies bring together more than 1500 key film professionals, craftspeople and decision-makers from across Canada to honour, celebrate and promote the talent and accomplishments of the Canadian film industry for a televised gala.
